Carbon accounting basics

Scope 1, 2 and 3: where do your emissions come from?

The Greenhouse Gas Protocol divides emissions into three scopes. In most organizations the largest share is in Scope 3, which is not directly controlled. Monitor combines all three in the same calculation engine.

Direct emissions

Emissions released directly into the atmosphere from sources your organization owns or controls.

  • Fuel combustion in boilers, generators and furnaces
  • Company vehicle fleet
  • Gas leaks from refrigeration and air-conditioning systems (HFC, SF₆)
  • Industrial process emissions

Frequently asked questions

What people ask before getting started.

If your question isn't here, you can ask our team during the demo call.

Do we need to buy new sensors or meters to use Monitor?

Not necessarily. The platform can take data from your existing meters, BMS/SCADA systems, ERP and utility bills. Where hourly or equipment-level monitoring is needed, metering can be added with IoT gateways.

Which factors are used in emission calculations?

The calculation engine uses a continuously updated emission factor library based on IPCC and DEFRA. For electricity it can work with location-based and hourly grid intensity; project-specific factors can also be defined.

How do you collect Scope 3 data?

Supplier, logistics, travel and waste data are collected through bulk import and stakeholder access. Suppliers can be given limited permissions to enter their own data, which then goes through automatic validation.

Which reporting frameworks do you support?

Ready-made templates for global frameworks such as CDP, SASB and Refinitiv, plus ISO 14001 processes, are supported. You can respond to several frameworks with a single data set and customize questions and formats for your organization.

Can consulting firms use the platform under their own brand?

Yes. With white-label dashboards and PDF reports you can present to clients under your own identity and benchmark the clients in your portfolio by intensity.

How is pricing determined?

The structure is modular. Pricing is tailored organization-wide or per client, based on the modules you use and the number of sites or clients.

How secure is our data?

The platform runs with role-based access, encryption and enterprise security layers. Auditors and stakeholders only access the data they are authorized for.

Can we import data from previous years?

Yes. Historical data from bills, meter readings and Excel/CSV files is imported in bulk and automatically validated, so you can see your base year and trends from day one.

How should we choose our base year?

Usually the most recent year with reliable, complete data that represents normal operations is chosen. The base year can be recalculated in cases such as acquisitions, mergers or method changes; the platform keeps a record of these changes.

How do alerts work?

You define thresholds for consumption, cost or electrical parameters. When a threshold is exceeded, the right people are notified; in critical cases an automatic work order can be triggered. Because analysis runs on the edge device, alerts are close to the source and fast.

Can we manage multiple companies or countries in one account?

The location, asset and sensor hierarchy supports company, region and site levels. While you get consolidated group-wide reports, each unit manages its own data within its permissions.

Can our auditors access the platform?

Yes. You can invite auditors in a controlled way and grant read-only access to the relevant periods and sites only. Which data and factor every result was calculated from is traceable.

Do we have to replace our existing SCADA system?

No. Monitor can take data from your existing SCADA, PLC and RTU infrastructure via common protocols such as Modbus, IEC 60870-5-104 and OPC UA. If the infrastructure is outdated or missing, a new SCADA/HMI solution is designed to fit your needs.

Do you also handle data transfer to the grid operator for solar and hydropower plants?

Data transfer from the plant SCADA to the telecontrol system of TEİAŞ or the relevant distribution company is designed and tested as part of the project. Power plant controller settings ensure automatic compliance with grid setpoints.

Is it suitable for unlicensed and rooftop solar plants as well?

Yes. The same platform is used from a single rooftop plant to hundreds of distributed plants. Small plants start with inverter and meter data; weather stations and control functions are added as needed.

How is environmental flow monitored at hydropower plants?

Level and flow measurements at the environmental flow release structure are recorded continuously, an alarm is raised when values fall below the threshold, and the release can be adjusted automatically through gate automation. Records are archived for inspections.

Which brands do you work with in panel manufacturing?

Our design is vendor-independent. PLC, drive, switchgear and instrumentation equipment are selected together with you based on the project's technical requirements, your site's existing standard and your spare parts strategy.

Do you revise and modernize existing panels?

Yes. Replacing old controllers, recreating missing documentation, adding new I/O and communication, and connecting the panel to SCADA are planned as part of the project and phased to minimize downtime.

Can it be used on mobile devices?

In addition to web dashboards, you can follow real-time alerts and key indicators from the field with the mobile app.
